Adam Shahan, a Sea-Bird Technical Support Engineer, provided support for a 10-day cruise from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut on the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent, with a science party from the Institute of Ocean Science (IOS). Adam assisted in deployment of an SBE 9plus CTD, integrated with an SBE 43 dissolved oxygen sensor, two fluorometers, two transmissometers, CDOM sensor, altimeter, and bottom contact switch. The CTD package was mounted beneath a 24-position SBE 32 Carousel Water Sampler, equipped with 10-liter bottles. Additionally, two ADCPs were mounted on the Carousel frame. The St. Laurent has a pair of bubblers on the bow and stern, which blasted air through vents beneath the water line. The bubblers, and vessel maneuvering, pushed pieces of ice away from the deployment area. When a swath was clear, the CTD package was deployed.
The trip benefitted both the science party and Sea-Bird. On-site explanations of mounting configurations and deployment procedures to produce the best data provided training that is difficult to reproduce in the classroom. And participating in the cruise re-familiarized Adam with the realities of deploying instruments, including time limitations, ship movement, weather, and physical constraints. Adam is just one of many Sea-Bird employees who have experience at sea, providing us with expertise in designing, building, and maintaining instruments that work in the real world, not just at the factory.
