Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of marine instruments for measurement of salinity, temperature, pressure, dissolved oxygen, and related oceanographic variables. Major products include Conductivity/Temperature/Depth (CTD) profilers, multi-bottle in-situ water samplers, moored CT recorders, wave/tide recorders, dissolved oxygen sensors, and thermosalinographs (click here for a complete listing of all our products). Customers include research institutes, ocean observing programs, national and local government agencies, engineering firms, and navies throughout the world. As part of our commitment to advancing the science of ocean measurement, we are deeply invested in engineering, metrology, calibration, software development, scientific analysis, and other essential technologies that make our products more accurate, reliable, and broadly useful.

Sea-Bird was founded in 1974 and incorporated in 1979, and currently employs 108 people. Approximately 60% of the company's annual sales are made outside the United States. The company has been profitable each year, and devotes a large fraction of its yearly revenue to research and development.

The company became wholly owned by Danaher Corporation (DHR) in November 2008. Dr. Nordeen (Norge) Larson (President and Oceanographer) and John Backes (Vice-President) are former owners and still serve as the active top management of the company. They both have extensive oceanographic and sea-going experience, and also perform a large part of the engineering design.

Major responsibility for operating management is in the hands of Dave Armstrong (Vice President Operations), Rick Baumann (Executive Officer), Heddy Gundersen (Business Manager), Calvin Lwin (Applications Engineering Manager), Dave Murphy (Research and Development Manager), and Mark Thorpe (Finance). Drawing upon more than 130 years of experience in the field, this team continues to maintain our collaborative approach to serving customers, and to guide Sea-Bird's growth.

After many years of operating in a number of separate, small buildings, Sea-Bird moved around the corner in January 2010. The new facility is large enough for all of our operations, and provides opportunities for expansion to adjacent buildings as we continue to grow.

The Sea-Bird Ocean Measurement Group was formed in 2010, joining Sea-Bird Electronics, WET Labs, and Satlantic to provide the best in biogeochemical and physical oceanographic sensors, and allowing us to better develop, design, and deliver comprehensive, integrated systems for our customers. The management and location of each of the companies in the Sea-Bird Ocean Measurement Group remains unchanged.
