Selection Guide -- Third Party Auxiliary Sensors

Descriptions and links on this page are provided as a convenient information source to our customers. Sea-Bird recommends products listed on this page, only to the extent that they are known to be of good quality, and are electronically, mechanically, and functionally compatible with Sea-Bird instruments and software (when used as suggested by Sea-Bird). Descriptions are current as of January 2013, but may be changed by the sensor manufacturer at any time.

For ordering Third Party sensors from Sea-Bird, see Third Party Product Configuration Options.

1 Measurement Type:
  • 4 pi or Scalar or Spherical -- Measures light independent of angle of incidence.
  • Cosine or Float -- Measures downwelling irradiance (maximum response to light from directly overhead, no response to light coming directly from the side or below).

2 Output Type:

  • Built-in log amplifier -- Connects directly to 0-5 V A/D channel on Sea-Bird CTD.
  • Requires log amplifier -- Requires CTD configured with a built-in log amplifier, or Sea-Bird PN 90310 Log Amp Module. PN 90310 mounts on CTD or cage; PAR sensor connects to PN 90310, which connects to 0-5V A/D channel on CTD.

Seapoint Turbidity Meter

Turbidity

880 nm 25, 125, 500 750 FTU 6000 m
1 Measurement type:
  • Backscatter -- A light source illuminates a water sample, and a photodetector converts radiated light to photocurrent; the amount of photocurrent depends mainly on the area of the illuminated particles, but also on particle size, shape, and reflectivity. The signal is processed, generating an output voltage related to NTUs.
  • Seapoint Turbidity -- Scattered light from suspended particles in the water is detected using dual 880 nm light sources and dual silicon photodiode detectors with visible light blocking filters. The sensor design confines the sensing volume to within 5 cm of the sensor windows.
  • Single-angle backscattering -- Measures scattering at 117 degrees, the angle determined as a minimum convergence point for variations in the volume scattering function induced by suspended materials and water itself.

2 WET Labs ECO turbidity sensor range is factory set, but is adjustable downward with setup cable and WET Labs software.
Campbell Scientific and Seapoint sensor ranges is adjustable with jumper cables.
3 WET Labs Bio-Wiper minimizes fouling in moored applications.
