Thermosalinographs are used to collect information about the sea surface, typically in flow-through systems operating continuously throughout a cruise. Thermosalinograph data can be used to calculate salinity, density, sound velocity, and other parameters of interest. Thermosalinographs are usually installed inside and near to the hull of a ship in order to make measurements on uncontaminated seawater. Optionally, you can plumb other types of sensors into the system for a wider range of measurements. Sea-Bird manufactures two thermosalinographs -- the full-featured SBE 21, and the more economical SBE 45.

The SBE 21 measures real-time sea surface temperature and conductivity. Removable SBE 21 sensors are housed in a deck/bulkhead-mountable plastic manifold for connection to a ship's pumped seawater system. It is AC-powered, and has an optically-isolated RS-232 data interface, a microprocessor, FLASH RAM, and real-time clock. Other features include four 0-5 volt A/D input channels for optional auxiliary sensors and an RS-232 input channel for an optional SBE 38 remote temperature sensor. The standard interface box contains a NMEA 0183 port for appending navigation and depth information from a NMEA device to the data stream. Data is typically output to the ship's computer, but can be stored internally for downloading at a later time if a dedicated computer is not desired.

The SBE 45 is an externally-powered, high-accuracy instrument, designed for shipboard determination of sea surface (pumped-water) conductivity and temperature. Salinity and sound velocity can also be computed. Communication with the SBE 45 is over an internal, 3-wire, RS-232C link, providing real-time data transmission. An optional Interface Box provides power, a NMEA 0183 port for appending navigation information from a NMEA navigation device to the data stream, and an RS-232 port for appending SBE 38 remote temperature sensor output.
