Configuration Details

SBE Improved sample bottles are available in 5-, 8-, 10, & 12-liter sizes. For other sizes (1.7-, 2.5-, 20-, & 30-liters), see Third Party sample bottles from Ocean Test Equipment.

Each SBE Improved bottle size is available in several types:

• Carousel mount -- Upper & lower bottle end caps are held in place by a length of latex tubing that runs inside bottle; when lanyard is released from pylon, latex tubing snaps bottle closed. Most common type of bottle.
• Carousel mount, External stainless-steel spring -- External stainless-steel spring replaces internal latex tubing; when lanyard is released from pylon, spring snaps bottle closed. Spring may function better in extreme cold than latex tubing. Because spring is external, it eliminates possibility of contamination of water sample from contaminants on internal latex tubing.
• Carousel mount, Internal teflon coated spring -- Upper & lower bottle end caps are held in place by a teflon-coated spring that runs inside bottle; when lanyard is released from pylon, spring snaps bottle closed. Spring may function better in extreme cold than latex tubing. Contaminants are less likely to adhere to teflon-coated spring than to latex tubing, reducing possibility of contamination of water sample.
• Carousel & Wire messenger mount -- Upper & lower bottle end caps are held in place by a length of latex tubing that runs inside bottle; when lanyard is released from pylon or messenger is sent down wire, latex tubing snaps bottle closed. Allows bottles to be used on Carousel and also provides option to mount bottles to a hydrowire where messenger weights are dropped down wire to close bottles manually.

Note: Each bottle comes with materials needed for lanyards (nylon monofilament line, brass hook, nicopress sleeves, & plastic lanyard ball).

• If bottles are ordered with Carousel, Sea-Bird puts Carousel together, mounts bottles, rigs lanyards appropriately, and then removes bottles and disassembles as needed for shipping. Therefore, lanyards are already rigged when customer receives bottles.
• However, if bottles are ordered separately, Sea-Bird cannot rig lanyards because we do not know precise lengths required. Customer is responsible for mounting bottles to Carousel & rigging lanyards appropriately, using provided lanyard materials. Note that a tool (such as pliers made for crimping on soldered electrical connections) is needed to crimp nicopress sleeves; see PN 65001, Crimping Tool for Nicopress Sleeves, in Bottle Spares / Accessories below.
