Part # Description Notes
50 DIGITAL OCEANOGRAPHIC PRESSURE SENSOR - Includes 7000 m titanium housing, RS-232 interface, 2.4 m power/digital interface cable (801385), SEASOFT software, & complete documentation. Quantity orders will be packed several instruments to a box & each box will contain one manual & one software CD-ROM. Single packing, with a manual & CD-ROM in each box, will be provided on request. Specify: pressure sensor range (depth) selection. SBE 50 pressure sensor, with no memory or internal batteries, is designed to be incorporated into oceanographic sensing systems. SBE 50 provides RS-232 output; for pressure sensor with 0 - 5V output, see SBE 29 Strain Gauge Pressure Sensor.

SBE 50 can be incorporated into several Sea-Bird CTD systems:

  • SBE 50 can be deployed with SBE 32 Carousel Water Sampler & Auto Fire Module (AFM), which provide autonomous water sampling capability. Order SBE 32 (32, 32C, or 32SC) & AFM (by selecting appropriate Carousel operating mode configuration in 32, 32C, or 32SC listing) separately.

  • SBE 50 can be deployed with SBE 55 ECO Water Sampler, which has built-in capabilities similar to that of an SBE 32 integrated with an AFM, providing autonomous water sampling capability. Order SBE 55 separately.

  • SBE 50 can be deployed with SBE 36 CTD Deck Unit & PDIM, which provide surface power & real-time data acquisition. Order SBE 36 & PDIM separately.

Seasave (real-time data acquisition software) cannot be used to acquire data for this system when used with SBE 50.

SBE 50 Pressure Sensor Range (depth) Selections -- MUST SELECT ONE
50-1a 20 m strain gauge pressure sensor Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using SBE 50, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 2000 & 7000 m sensors --
  • 2000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 2 m (= 0.1% * 2000 m),
    resolution = 0.04 m (= 0.002% * 2000 m)
  • 7000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 7 m (= 0.1% * 7000 m),
    resolution = 0.14 m (= 0.002% * 7000 m)
50-1b 100 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1c 350 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1h 600 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1d 1000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1e 2000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1f 3500 m strain gauge pressure sensor
50-1g 7000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
SBE 50 Analog Output Option
50-2 0-5 Volt analog output in addition to RS-232 digital output (on single 6-pin connector, includes 2.4 m power/digital/analog interface cable PN 801386) Single 6-pin connector provides RS-232 & 0-5 Volt output, & power input.
SBE 50 Wet-Pluggable Connector Options
50-3a Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors (4-pin) instead of Standard (XSG/RMG) connectors on instrument & data I/O cable

Standard Connector (Impulse XSG)
          Wet-pluggable connector (MCBH) --

Wet-pluggable connectors may be mated in wet conditions. Their pins do not need to be dried before mating. By design, water on connector pins is forced out as connector is mated. However, they must not be mated or un-mated while submerged. Wet-pluggable connectors have a non-conducting guide pin to assist pin alignment (exception: 6-pin connectors) & require less force to mate, making them easier to mate reliably under dark or cold conditions, compared to our standard connectors. Like standard connectors, wet-pluggables need proper lubrication & require care during use to avoid trapping water in sockets.
50-3b Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors (6-pin) instead of Standard (AG306/AG206) connectors on instrument & data I/O cable
SBE 50 Interface Cables (4-pin)
801385 Data/Power interface cable, RMG-4FS to DB-9S & red/black twisted wire leads, 2.4 m (DN 32277) Test cables are used for setting up system. Applicable cable (standard or wet-pluggable connector) with red/black twisted wire leads included with SBE 50 if 50-2 not ordered; these are spares.
801376 Data / Power interface cable, RMG-4FS to DB-9S & 9V battery snap, 2.4 m (DN 32604)
801206 Data/Power interface cable, Wet-Pluggable, MCIL-4FS to DB-9S & red/black twisted wire leads, 2.4 m (DN 32366)
801263 Data/Power interface cable, Wet-Pluggable, MCIL-4FS to DB-9S & 9V battery snap, 2.4 m (DN 32490)
SBE 50 Interface Cables (6-pin)
801386 Data/Power interface cable, AG-206 to DB-9S & red/black twisted wire power leads, blue/black analog signal leads, 2.4 m (DN 32737) Test cables are used for setting up system. Applicable cable (standard or wet-pluggable connector) included with SBE 50 if 50-2 ordered; these are spares.
801387 Data/Power interface cable, Wet-Pluggable, MCIL-6FS & red/black twisted wire power leads, blue/black analog signal leads, 2.4 m (DN 32738)
