Part # Description Notes
55 ECO WATER SAMPLER, Includes: Electronic Control Module (ECM) with programmable auto-fire function & real-time sea cable interface, 600 m plastic housing  with anodized aluminum end cap & standard XSG connectors, one 3-position lanyard release array, stainless steel guard frame with six integral bottle mounting brackets, three 4-liter ECO sample bottles, ECM to computer cable, & complete documentation. Real-time operation requires SBE 33 Deck Unit (sold separately). Order optional 6-bottle system & CTD integration in addition to basic configuration if required. ECO is shipped fully assembled.

ECO can be used with following systems:

  • Autonomous operation (no conducting wire; bottles close based on pre-programmed pressures or times) ‑ for use with SBE 19, 19plus, 19plus V2, or 25 CTD; SBE 50 Pressure Sensor; or no CTD

  • Real-time data acquisition & water sampler control (requires SBE 33 Deck Unit, slip-ring equipped winch, & single-conductor cable) -- for use with SBE 19, 19plus, 19plus V2, 25, or 49 CTD; or no CTD

Notes:

  • Optional auxiliary sensors on CTDs not shown.
  • (real-time system) Computer, slip-ring-equipped winch, conductive cable, & NMEA 0183 navigation device not supplied by Sea-Bird.
  • (real-time system) Seasave version 7.19 or later also supports acquisition of data from a NMEA device connected directly to computer (instead of deck unit) for all CTDs shown.
  • (real-time system with SBE 49) Seasave does not allow acquisition of Surface PAR data.
See SBE 32, 32C Compact, or 32SC Sub-Compact Carousel Water Sampler for samplers with more bottles, and/or samplers that are compatible for use with SBE 9plus / 11plus CTD (SBE 32 or 32C only).
SBE 55 6-Bottle Option
55-1 Upgrade to 6-bottle system – add one 3-position lanyard release array, cable, & three 4-liter ECO sample bottles

Note: Shown with titanium wet-pluggable connector (see 55-3a & 55-3b below)
Standard ECO comes with 1 lanyard release module (latches for 3 bottles) & 3 bottles. You can add a second lanyard release module to provide 6-bottle capability. Additional release module can be ordered with ECO, or can be ordered later & easily added to ECO in field. Each lanyard release module is cabled to a separate connector on Electronics Control Module (ECM).

55-1 includes lanyard release module, cable to connect it to ECM, three 4-liter bottles, & band clamps to attach bottles to mounting brackets.

SBE 55 Wet-Pluggable Connector Options (aluminum ECM end cap)
55-2a 3-bottle system with aluminum ECM end cap: Wet-Pluggable connectors instead of Standard connectors on 55 & cables

Standard Connector (Impulse XSG)
on lanyard release module

Wet-pluggable connector (MCBH)
on lanyard release module

Wet-pluggable connectors may be mated in wet conditions. Their pins do not need to be dried before mating. By design, water on connector pins is forced out as connector is mated. However, they must not be mated or un-mated while submerged. Wet-pluggable connectors have a non-conducting guide pin to assist pin alignment (exception: 6-pin connectors) & require less force to mate, making them easier to mate reliably under dark or cold conditions, compared to our standard (Impulse XSG/RMG) connectors. Like standard connectors, wet-pluggables need proper lubrication & require care during use to avoid trapping water in sockets.

If planning to use SBE 55 for autonomous operation (no conducting wire; bottles close based on pre-programmed pressures or times), we strongly recommend wet-pluggable connectors. You must connect to SBE 55 on deck after each deployment to re-arm auto-fire mechanism. Wet-pluggable connectors provide better reliability given potential for rain, wave splash, etc.
(If cost is an issue, an alternative is to use a jumper cable, with a standard connector at SBE 55 end and a wet-pluggable connector at other end, to plug into a wet-pluggable data I/O cable. This allows you to mate / unmate a wet-pluggable connector to arm system. Contact Sea-Bird for quote for jumper cable.)

These options include substituting aluminum wet-pluggable connectors for all connectors on Electronics Control Module (ECM) & on lanyard release module(s), as well as compatible cable(s) from ECM to lanyard release module(s).

55-2b 6-bottle system with aluminum ECM end cap: Wet-Pluggable connectors instead of Standard connectors on 55 & cables
SBE 55 Titanium End Cap & Connector Upgrade Options (better corrosion resistance, less maintenance)
55-3a 3-bottle system: Titanium ECM end cap with Wet-pluggable connectors (ECM, release array, & cables) instead of aluminum ECM end cap
ECM with standard aluminum end cap & standard connectors
Standard Electronics Control Module (ECM) has an aluminum end cap (as shown at right). This upgrade provides:
  • titanium end cap for ECM,
  • titanium wet-pluggable connectors on titanium end cap & on lanyard release module(s), &
  • compatible cable(s) from ECM to lanyard release module(s)
55-3b 6-bottle system: Titanium ECM end cap with Wet-pluggable connectors (ECM, release array, & cables) instead of aluminum ECM end cap
SBE 55 CTD Integration Options
55-4a CTD integration (Standard Connectors), SBE 19/19plus/19plus V2, includes CTD mount brackets & CTD to ECM cable CTD integration options provide appropriate mounts & interface cables for system.
  • 55-4a: SBE 19 / 19plus /19plus V2 with pump is mounted to ECO wire mesh.
  • 55-4b: SBE 25 main housing, temperature & conductivity sensor pair, & pump are each mounted to SBE 55 wire mesh.
  • 55-4c & -4d: These are same as 55-4a & -4b respectively, except they include wet-pluggable connectors on interface cables. Applicable if wet-pluggable connectors selected for SBE 55 (55-2a, 55-2b, 55-3a, or 55-3b).
These options determine mounts & interface cables for CTD, but do not include cost of CTD. Order CTD separately.

Note regarding third party sensors: These integration options do not include mounting third party sensors. For mounting third party sensors, contact Sea-Bird (Third Party product configuration page will be updated in future to list ECO mounting options).

801714 4-liter ECO water sample bottle (spare) ECO water sample bottle is uniquely designed for ECO Sampler.

Several early production models of ECO were sold with Ocean Test Equipment (OTE) bottles instead of PN 801714 ECO 4-liter bottles. PN 50424, 50425, 50426, 50427, & 50430 cannot be used with OTE bottles. For bottle repair kit for OTE bottles, order PN 50135 OTE bottle repair kit instead of PN 50427.

Note: Each bottle comes with materials needed for lanyards (nylon monofilament line, brass hook, nicopress sleeves, & plastic lanyard ball).

  • For bottles that come with ECO, Sea-Bird puts ECO together, mounts bottles, & rigs lanyards appropriately. Therefore, lanyards are already rigged when customer receives order.
  • However, when spare bottles are ordered, Sea-Bird cannot rig lanyards because we do not know precise lengths required. Customer is responsible for mounting bottles to ECO & rigging lanyards appropriately, using provided lanyard materials. Note that a tool (such as pliers made for crimping on soldered electrical connections) is needed to crimp nicopress sleeves; order PN 65001, Crimping Tool for Nicopress Sleeves, if needed.
