The Inductive Cable Coupler (ICC) is available as a 20-turn coupler (Version 4a), 100-turn coupler (Version 4b), and 8-turn coupler (older OEM applications). Transmit power levels depend primarily on the transmitting device, the number of turns in the coupler, and the size of the gap in the coupler. Transmit power levels do not change significantly with the number of IM devices in the loop or the loop impedance, although very low IM loop impedance may increase transmit power levels; always test IM systems with at least 100 ohms in the IM loop.
The table below summarizes power requirements:
20-turn ICC (Version 4a) |
100-turn ICC (Version 4b) |
8-turn ICC
(OEM Version) |

Connection (no ICC) |
|
Surface Inductive Modem (SIM) | 35 mA | 20 mA | Not allowed | 20 mA |
Inductive Modem Module (IMM) -- Low power transmit setting (1) |
Not allowed | 1.2 mA | Not allowed | 1.3 mA |
Inductive Modem Module (IMM) -- Full power transmit setting (1) |
12 mA | 4 mA | Not allowed | 40 mA |
Underwater Inductive Modem (UIM) (2) | Not allowed | Not allowed | 15 mA | Not allowed |
Notes: (1) IMM power setting is set with SetEnableFullPwrTx= command. (2) Underwater Inductive Modem is a component used by OEMs to integrate Sea-Bird's inductive modem technology with a third-party sensor. |
